This course is a primer on the basics of Project Management. Students will learn how to use Project Management techniques to plan, organize, control, document and close out their projects successfully and with minimum risk.

This three-day course provides participants with a solid foundation of PMI's project management methodology, using the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge Fourth Edition as the source material. Participants will choose a real-world project taken directly from their industry, and apply the PMI processes involved in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing a project. Participants will engage in numerous discussion groups focusing on best practices. Students will also complete numerous templates for their real-world projects including project charters, scope statements, work breakdown structures (WBS), risk registers and more. Participants take all electronic templates and completed exercises with them after the class.

Accurately defining project scope is a critical factor of a successful project. Research has shown that substandard requirements and scoping techniques have resulted in projects exceeding their planned budgets by 200%. This course provides participants with tools and techniques to help them determine and deliver products, services and results that meet customer requirements and expectations. At course completion, students will be able to gather requirements, create a project scope statement, create a WBS, determine sign-off processes and control scope changes.

Participants will apply all course principles to a work-related case study taken directly from their work environment. At course completion, students will be able to identify stakeholders, communicate problems effectively, identify and apply conflict resolution techniques, and evaluate closing phase communications.

This two-day course enables participants to further their knowledge of project risk management through a thorough investigation of risk methodologies and tools. These methodologies and tools explore and document the sources of risk, analyze their potential impact and provide recommended strategies for minimizing and/or avoiding risks. This class utilizes and builds upon principles introduced in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), the core publication of the Project Management Institute (PMI). Participants apply all concepts and templates to a case study taken from their organization or industry.
